Gus Gerard, 1st UVA player to leave early for the League, his battles with Barry Parkhill, Dr. J, Bird, Magic, alcohol, drugs, and recovery!

Gus Gerard is probably the most talented UVA Player in history and most fans have not heard his story. Sit back and listen to one of the all time ABA greats talk about being the first UVA player to leave school early for the pros in 1974. Playing with Barry Parkhill.

Gus on being recruited by UVA.

Were they paying recruits in the 70s?

How did he decide to leave early?

The crazy adventures in the ABA with St. Louis Spirits.

Hitting rock bottom and near death experience.

What got him back out of the spiral?

Getting to play pro basketball at age 41?

His last trip back to Cville and meeting Tony Bennett.

Uplifting and inspiring. Gus Gerard never fails to deliver. Great job by the interviewers as well. Thank you for this!

This is probably my favorite podcast of yours so far. I was an undergrad at UVa when Gus Gerard played for the Hoos, and he was a special player. Had he returned for his fourth year, the frontcourt would have had him, Wally Walker, and Marc Iavaroni — three pretty solid pro players of the future. And I think Gus would have fit in just fine in Terry Holland’s system. I’m heartened to hear how he has turned his life around and hope to see him in Charlottesville sometime soon.
