Colin Porter Reflects on his Unofficial Visit to UVA
On June 28th, 2023 point guard Colin Porter took an unofficial visit to UVA to get a look at Charlottesville, the University, and the Virginia basketball program. Following his visit on Grounds, we caught up with the Kentucky native to get his thoughts on his recruitment, UVA, and what he could bring to the table for the Wahoos.
Porter's thoughts on the visit
To start, Porter emphasizes that “the unofficial went amazing. It went even better than expected.” He notes that “the coaching staff was really what struck my eyes,” adding that “they were just so kind and I could tell they loved me being there,” and how “it was just a great day to meet Coach Bennett and all the staff.”
As for Charlottesville and Grounds, Porter says “the campus was sweet,” and that he noticed the fact that, clearly, “there were a lot of brains behind all the architecture. It was laid out amazingly,” as the rising junior at Ashland Blazer points out that “it's just a place that if you’re there, you’re lucky to be there.”
Porter and the basketball program
In terms of what the basketball program could do for him, Porter thinks that “they could really help me in basketball but more importantly they could help me figure out who I am after college and after basketball is over with.”
He points out that “that's what coach Bennett really strives on doing,” and that, as Porter considers what he wishes from the school he chooses to attend, “It's something that I personally want to go to a college where they care for me more as a person than as an athlete.”
As for the basketball side of things, Porter is well aware that “Virginia is somewhere where you have to be a special type of talent to be there.” With that said, he notes “I think what I can bring is just a winning attitude,” as he points out how “I’m someone who tries to get my teammates better and involved early in the offense. If that’s what
As a player, Porter says that “I try to be a true point guard which is something kind of rare today,” before adding that “If I need to score I can do that but I like to get my teammates involved first.”
Porter's recruitment
For his recruitment moving forward, Porter is taking things slow as he heads into his junior year. As of now, he has six Division I offers, but notes that “I’m still just playing the field.” He says that “I love my two visits to Liberty and Virginia. Both have something special.”
But overall, Porter sees the big picture, saying that “I think whenever the time is right is when I’ll know where I want to go to college. Coach Bennett is going to see me play in July so we’ll just see where it goes from there.”
