Recruiting Rundown April 1st
The COVID-19 epidemic has kept coaches and recruits apart. But the late recruiting cycle goes on. Players will now need to make decisions without the benefit of visits. So called virtual tours and face time visits are being utilized, including by Tony Bennett and staff. Virginia currently has one open scholarship for next season. According to various reports, they're eyeing at least three potential targets. All of which they have some prior history with.
Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz included the Wahoos in his group of 11 schools under consideration. The 6'4 guard from Charlotte averaged 12 points and 4 assists during his time at Santa Clarra, and shot 40% from three-point range this past season. Tony Bennett and staff gave him a long look out of Providence Day School. He even visited in August of his junior year. Trey will have two years of eligibility remaining. He'd need to sit out next season unless the NCAA passes the rule change allowing immediate eligibility to first time transfers, which many people expect to happen.
Wertz isn't the only Trey with the coaching staff's attention. Rice transfer Trey Murphy reportedly has been hearing from Bennett and company. The 6'8 guard/forward from Durham is another sharpshooter. He averaged 13.7 point and 5.5 rebounds this past season, while shooting 37% from three-point range on high volume. He'll have two seasons left to play, and plans to redshirt next year regardless of potential rule changes. Murphy was also evaluated by UVA as a member of the 2018 class. He's grown three inches since then, and has a long list of suitors this time around.
Burlington (NC) senior 6'5 wing JaDun Michael is hearing from Virginia has well after rethinking his commitment to Wichita State. Originally in the 2021 class, he was being evaluated as recently as September before deciding to reclassify. He's considered one of the better athletes in the country, especially known for his defensive ability. NC State, Pitt, Alabama, and many others are involved. Michael made the trip to Charlottesville for a game in February of last year.
