Silas Barksdale Discusses his Commitment to Virginia

By Houston Wilson
Ryan Odom and Virginia secured their second commitment from the class of 2025 after Silas Barksdale announced his decision to decommit from VCU and commit to UVA. The 6’8” post player from Woodside High School in Newport News is ranked No. 149 in the 2025 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Barksdale spoke with Locker Room Access about his decision to follow Coach Odom to Virginia.
"The main reason is the relationship I’ve built with Coach Odom. He’s a great person on and off the court, and I truly believe I’ll thrive under him no matter where he coaches. As soon as he announced he was heading to Virginia, I told him, ‘I committed to play for you, and I’d love the chance to do that at UVA.’"
Barksdale elaborated on what makes Odom an appealing coach.
"He’s just a great coach. I love the way his teams play—the tempo, the style, and the freedom he gives his players to learn through mistakes. That approach helps players develop in the long run, and I can’t wait to see what his system allows me to do at the next level."
As for how Odom plans to use him at Virginia, Barksdale is eager to embrace his expanded role.
"He’s prepared to utilize me in a variety of ways, and I’m excited for all of them. He wants me to shoot more than I did in high school, handle the ball more, and attack the basket more aggressively. At the same time, he wants me to stay physical, be a strong presence on the court, and continue to pass well. Whatever he asks me to do, I’ll do it to the best of my ability."
The transition happened quickly—Odom accepted the Virginia job on March 22—but for Barksdale, it feels like everything aligned perfectly.
"It’s a blessing. Growing up, I always dreamed of playing in the ACC, so this is surreal. It’s also special that Coach Odom is returning to a place where he grew up. I can’t wait to be part of such a passionate fanbase and community. It’s an incredible feeling."
When asked what Virginia fans can expect from him, Barksdale made his approach clear.
"They can expect a strong presence in the paint. I’m going to attack the glass relentlessly and secure every rebound I can. I’ll bring energy, play hard, and do whatever it takes to help UVA win."
Barksdale becomes the second member of Virginia’s 2025 recruiting class, joining St. Anne’s-Belfield (VA) point guard Chance Mallory.
The Wahoos are in the early stages of restocking the roster. There were three transfer recruits visiting over the weekend. Two of Odom’s players from VCU, guard Brandon Jennings and center Luke Bamgboye. They also had one of the top players in the portal on Grounds, Nevada forward Nick Davidson. Odom’s hope is surely that there will be more commitment news in the days ahead.
