Virginia adds VCU transfer Martin Carrere

Virginia’s run of commitments continued on Wednesday.  VCU transfer wing Martin Carrere announced that he’ll follow Coach Ryan Odom to Charlottesville, making Virginia’s fourth transfer addition in a span of five days.  The 6’8” combo forward from France redshirted this season at VCU.  He still has four years of remaining eligibility.

About Martin Carrere

European players have been a key roster ingredient over the years for new Virginia coach Ryan Odom and his staff.  They’ve developed a nice pipeline of prospects who’ve contributed at each of Odom’s stops.  That will continue at UVA, starting with Martin Carrere following his coach from VCU.

Carrere hasn’t played a collegiate game yet, having redshirted this season.  He spent the 2023-24 season with Limoges in the French Under-21 league, where he averaged 8.6 points while shooting 39% from three-point range.  The sniper also has experience in international competition as part of the French U18 team during the EuroBasket tournament in 2024.  He averaged 6.4 points on 42% from long range in that event.

He's an intriguing developmental piece for the Cavaliers.  Ryan Odom, having seen him every day at VCU, is obviously high on his potential to want to bring him along in the ACC.  That’s really the best endorsement.  His combination of size and shooting ability provide a lot of long term upside, if he can continue to develop physically and adjust to the college game.

Martin projects as a combo forward, more of a wing at the moment.  As he fills out in time, the stretch-four role will probably suit him best in college.  He’ll turn 19 in July, so still very young with his best basketball years ahead.

For a Virginia program that lost talented underclassmen in the transfer portal, Carrere helps replenish the prospect pool.  It’s clearly an addition with the future in mind, but there could be an opportunity for him to compete for a role this season as well.

What’s Next for Virginia

With the addition of Carrere, Virginia is up to eight projected players for the 2025-26 season.  They’ll need at least four more,, more likely five or six before it’s over.

The name that’s been swirling the past couple days is San Francisco transfer guard Malik Thomas, this season’s top scorer in the West Coast Conference.  If anything is happening there, it will probably be soon.  And just today, there's more chatter surrounding BYU guard Dallin Hall.  So, we're on full-time commitment watch these days.

We’re still waiting on a verdict from another VCU transfer, freshman center Luke Bamgboye.  Seems to be a decision between UVA or staying put in Richmond.

Kansas transfer wing Rakease Passmore is reportedly planning to visit UVA.   The new staff has strong connections with him, so that could be one to watch.

Other than that, we’ll see what pops up in the days ahead.  The big remaining hole is up front.  The way things have gone, expect Ryan Odom and staff to have a surprise up their sleeve.

Final Thoughts

Martin Careere is a solid addition.  After the last several additions being of the short term variety, it shows that Odom and staff are mindful of long term roster building as well.  Carrere has a good chance of developing into a valuable player down the line for the Cavaliers.
